Every Wednesday, Driehoek Animal Hospital offers our Wacky Wednesday sterilisation and castration special for cats & dogs to help make responsible pet care more accessible to our community. Sterilising your pet can provide important health and population-control benefits, but the ideal age and timing are not necessarily the same for every animal. What does sterilisation mean? In female pets, sterilisation is commonly called spaying. The ovaries are removed, sometimes together with the uterus, preventing pregnancy and eliminating future heat cycles. In male pets, castration involves removing the testicles. This prevents reproduction and removes the main source of testosterone. Both procedures are performed under general anaesthesia with appropriate pain management.
